Gastric Sleeve Surgery – Sleeve Gastrectomy

Gastric Sleeve DiagramGastric Sleeve surgery is a weight loss procedure whereby approximately three quarters of the stomach is lasting removed, significantly reducing the food-holding capacity of the organ to allow patients to feel satisfied from a much smaller meal. Average weight loss with Gastric Sleeve is a significant percentage of excess weight.

This surgery is a good alternative to Gastric Bypass, as it requires no re-routing of the intestinal tract and comes with minimal concerns for nutritional deficiency. It also offers a more lasting solution to the Gastric Band, with no foreign body implanted and minimal ongoing follow-up required. It is most suitable for patients with a BMI of 40 and above or for those 35 and above with associated health problems, like diabetes, sleep apnoea, high blood pressure, PCOS, etc. Patients find they can tolerate a wide variety of foods, only in smaller portions, and are advised to make lifestyle changes including healthy eating habits and regular exercise.

The surgery is performed laparoscopically (keyhole) and patients spend 2-4 nights in hospital before returning home and resuming normal activities within 1-2 weeks.
