Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding, Gastric Banding
LAP-BAND® Surgery (gastric banding) is a laparoscopic (keyhole) procedure in which a soft silicone band is placed around the top part of the stomach to create a small upper pouch, restricting the volume of food that can be consumed in a single meal. Lap banding leads to effective weight loss results, with around majority of patients losing a significant amount of their excess weight.
LAP-BAND® Surgery is now available for those with a BMI of 35 and above or BMI 30 and above with an associated health problem, such as Type II Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Sleep Apnoea, Infertility (PCOS), and Degenerative Joint Problems. Calculate your BMI using our BMI Calculator.
The soft silicone band holds a variable amount of saline-adjusted by the doctor/specialist with a hypodermic needle through a port that is placed just under the skin of the abdomen-that influences the level of restriction experienced by patients when eating (see video below). Laparoscopic surgery allows for reduced pain, shorter hospital stays, and earlier return to normal everyday activities. The LAP-BAND® procedure is the most commonly performed weight loss procedure in Australia and has a number of advantages over other procedures.
