What is a Gastric Balloon?
Gastric Balloons are an innovative non-surgical solution to sustainable and effective weight loss. Balloons are designed to assist overweight individuals with a BMI between 27 and 35 with their weight loss journey. Once placed in your stomach, the balloon reduces your cravings and keeps you feeling full for longer.

Types of Balloons
WLSA offers two main types of Gastric Balloons; the Allurion Balloon and the Orbera Intragastric Balloon (BIB or Orbera 365).
Allurion Balloon
The Allurion Balloon is an innovative device that is a non-surgical, non-interventional intragastric balloon.
Procedure
The procedure is administered by a Nurse Practitioner in the WLSA clinic with no need for anaesthetic or endoscopy. The device is swallowed by the patient, with a radiographer on hand to ensure its optimal positioning. The procedure is completed when the Nurse Practitioner fills the balloon with saline, after which the patient is ready to go home.
Recovery
Patients can usually resume normal activities after three days.
Maintenance
The balloon remains in the stomach for four months before the dissolvable suture breaks down and passes naturally.
Orbera Intragastric Balloon
There are two types of Orbera gastric balloon, the BIB balloon which stays in the stomach for up to six months and the Orbera 365 balloon which stays in the stomach for up to 12 months. Both are non-surgical procedures that involves placing a saline-filled balloon in the stomach.
The Procedure
The procedure is administered by the surgeon in a day surgical environment. The balloon is inserted through the oesophagus via endoscope in a deflated state and then filled with saline while patients are under a low dose of anaesthetic. There is no surgery involved.
Recovery
Patients can usually resume normal activities after 3-5 days.
Maintenance:
Depending on if you're more suitable for the BIB or the Orbera 365, the balloon remains in the stomach for six or 12 months, and patients can expect to lose a significant percentage of excess weight during this time.
Ongoing Support
As with all of our treatments, a 12 month Healthy Outcomes Process Program, which includes support from a WLSA psychologist and dietitian, compliments the procedure, assisting patients to maintain the weight loss after the balloon is removed.
