The Changing Landscape of Mental Health: Reflecting on R U OK? Day

Mental Health Has Long Been A Topic That We Avoid Discussing

For generations, we’ve been taught to bottle our emotions and not talk about what’s going on inside of us. But in our fast-paced world, mental health is a global concern that we can no longer ignore. Reflecting on R U OK? Day, which occurs every September 9th, we are reminded of the importance of talking openly about mental health. Today we’ll explore the changing landscape of mental health and discuss why having these conversations is more important than ever.

In a recent conversation with my 93-year-old father, he revealed that he had never experienced stress. I was in awe. I couldn’t fathom how someone could live that long and not have experienced the emotional ups and downs that life can bring. But it made me reflect on how times have changed. Words like stress, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder are no longer taboo. People now openly acknowledge these struggles, and we understand the importance of talking about them.

Understanding Mental Health Is Crucial; A Personal Check-in Routine Can Help

It involves asking the right questions to understand our mental well-being. This is where the question, “Are you okay?” comes into play. But it shouldn’t stop there. This question should delve into mental health intricacies, exploring its implications on behavior, relationships, self-perception, and functionality. Self-awareness is the first step in making changes to improve your mental health.

Recognizing physical manifestations of stress and anxiety can serve as warning signs. When we’re stressed or anxious, our bodies respond. We might feel tightness in our chest, shortness of breath, or an upset stomach. Paying attention to these warning signs can help us identify when we need to take a step back and prioritize our mental health. This is where trusted advisors, friends, and professional help play vital roles during challenging times.
