What is an ESG procedure?
Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty is a relatively new procedure for patients wanting weight loss outcomes similar to other surgical weight loss procedures without the additional surgical risks. It is reversible and non-invasive. It involves placing internal stitches inside the stomach to reduce the size of the stomach.

BMI calculator: Are you eligible?
Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty is most suitable for people with a BMI of 29+ who need help with existing health issues (i.e. type 2 diabetes, blood pressure, dyslipidemia or fatty liver disease), and does not want a permanent procedure. People with a history of reflux, Hiatus Hernia, and Barretts Oesophagus can also benefit from ESG.
However, this might not be a suitable option for those who have had gastrointestinal bleeding, a hiatal hernia larger than 3 centimeters or who's had prior stomach surgery.
Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Pros and cons
- Can improve health conditions such as heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, severe sleep apnea
- A fast procedure which can be completed in less than 2 hours
- Does not require an extended hospital stay
- Can resume work and lifestyle commitments within 1-3 days
- Reversible and repeatable procedure
Risks of Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty
As with any surgery, there is always a degree of risk.
Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty is a procedure with minimal complications and risks, however, such outcomes cannot be guaranteed. Some of the risks include stomach leaks, bleeding, abdominal infection, and esophageal injury.
But don't worry, they are easily manageable with medication and follow up gastroscopy. Our medical team will also walk you through the risks and provide steps you can take to minimise any potential issues.
